In the United States, a California beef packing company has issued a voluntary recall due to a potential salmonella outbreak.

What is really retarded is the fsis.usda.gov statement says:

"The ground beef products were distributed to a retail distribution center in Arizona. Because these products were repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names, consumers should check with their local retailer to determine whether they may have purchased any of the products subject to recall."

In other words I would interpret this as the following.  At the current time, we don't know exactly who has these ground beef packages so customers, go figure it out yourself by calling your market.

The big problem with this, is the usda should provide more traceability on where meats go to and how they are packaged.  So what do you do?

  • If you bought any ground beef (packaged or unpackaged) - do not consume it
  • Call your market to see if they were serving ground beef affected by the recall.  If it is clear then prepare it as usual.
  • If you can't get an answer from your market be safe and throw it away.  You really don't want to risk any salmonella poisoning

Even though technically unpackaged ground beef should not be affected, be safe and check anyways.  Ground beef is traditionally ground up in the market, so they shouldn't be unpackaging ground beef and selling it

Err on the side of caution! Ensure your ground beef is clean or throw it away!
